It must have been a shock for Peter to find that his heavy catch was breaking the net (verse 6). He must have wondered whether it was to be another fiasco. Well, sometimes things do not work out as we expected, but Romans 8:28 makes it quite plain that for the believer there can be no such thing as utter failure, so faith need never fear. The antidote to negative thinking is to "launch out into the deep". For every one of us God has some new step of faith, however small, and we cannot grow spiritually unless we take it. We shall find that He is only seeking to stretch our capacity, and each small act of obedience will lead us on into an ever-growing appreciation of His sufficiency.
